“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
